When a Cooling Tower Has Been Modified Several Times, Should You Still Copy the Original Fill?

Here is a situation we see more often than people might expect.

A customer needs replacement Cooling Tower Fill and sends us an old drawing from when the tower was originally built.

The drawing may look complete, but the tower itself may have changed several times since then.

Industrial Cooling Towers Rarely Stay Completely Original

Over the years, a plant may replace fans, modify water distribution, change pumps or alter the operating load.

The fill section may also have been replaced by different suppliers. After several maintenance cycles, the original drawing may no longer represent the actual tower.

Why This Matters When Ordering Fill

The current tower dimensions and operating conditions determine whether a particular Cooling Tower Media configuration is suitable.

Simply copying a twenty-year-old fill specification can therefore create unnecessary risk.

Check the Current Tower Before Production

For crossflow or counterflow replacement projects, the current installation dimensions should be confirmed before production.

For example, 750/950mm Dual-width Cross-flow/Counter-flow Fill may be relevant when the current tower requires different width options.

For a tower with a specific 750mm requirement, 750mm Width Cross-flow/Counter-flow Fill provides another example of why the actual installation dimensions should be checked rather than relying only on an old drawing.

For counterflow applications with smaller or different width requirements, 300/600mm Dual-width Counter-flow Fill may also be considered according to the current tower configuration.

Photographs Are More Useful Than Many Buyers Think

A few clear photographs of the inside of the tower can reveal details that are missing from an old drawing.

They can show support conditions, existing fill arrangement, distribution components and areas that have already been modified.

Do You Need to Copy the Old Product?

Not necessarily.

The purpose of a replacement project is to restore the cooling system, not simply reproduce a product because it was used many years ago.

If the tower operating conditions have changed, a different Cooling Tower Fill configuration may be more appropriate.

What We Prefer to Do

When a customer sends us an old specification, we use it as a reference rather than treating it as the final answer.

We compare it with current dimensions, photographs and available operating information. If the existing product is still suitable, there is no reason to complicate the project. If the tower has changed, the Cooling Tower Media configuration should be reviewed accordingly.

Final Thoughts

Old drawings are valuable, but they should not automatically override the current condition of the cooling tower.

For replacement projects, the safest approach is to compare the original information with what is actually inside the tower today.
